1st Ski tour of season

Well I'm sitting in Blue Star Cafe sipping on coffee recovering from being shitfaced all day yesterday riding with friends at Solitude and taking a short break from 6 days in a row. Going to make turns today on my new sticks after my caffeine fix. This past Monday I decided to go skin up Deer Valley instead of riding chairs. To accompany me I brought the dags. Started at Empire base and skinned up to the top of the Empire chair. As the sun blazed down on the snow it softened up and making turns was quite enjoyable for the three us. I wasn't able to get low enough for face shots but the dogs were choking on snow the whole way down. yep I was jealous and made them sit in the back seat on the way home.

Empire Peak

I wish I could be as fast as Izzie and Hanky on the uptracks

Top lift shack on Empire Mtn

Most efficient way up from the lodge was to use Orion trail to summit Empire Mtn.

A-Basin

Snoworries and I decided to hit the Basin today, not bad for preseason, had a few more runs open than last visit. It was a nice spring day, 50degs and sunny.

The Basin:

Snoworries working hard:

The Professor, we're hiking this tomorrow before I leave for NY:

The Professor is accessible from Loveland Pass, so we'll hit the Basin first for a few runs early on and then around 11am make our way to the summit. It looked pretty tracked out but yet still plenty to get for tomorrow.

Opening Weekend

Solitude resort opened this weekend with 4 chairs running. After 3 days in a row my legs are feeling the burn and need rest. With all returning friends, this season is going to kick ass. THINK SNOW and keep your tips up! Or as crazy george would say "ski you later"

Loveland Pass/AVI Training

We woke up and made the decision to practice with our avalanche transceivers at Loveland Pass today.  Reality set in quickly when we practiced our multiple burial searching.  Keep on practicing because practice makes better!

Winter Weather for Rockies

I'm currently hanging in Columbus, but heading back to D-Town tomorrow and it looks like I'm in for a little treat:

Hopefully we receive the higher side of the forecasts and I'll be playing in over a foot of freshies on Thursday! StacheMan will definitely be coming Thursday, work or no work, he's in.

TRICK OR TREAT!!!!!!!!!

Left in the Fall...

...approached somewhere in between fall and winter...

...and arrived in WINTER!!!

10:15 in NY and no traffic on the Belt Parkway?

Stopping for a breather.

Peak by 11:30 (thanks cat track). About 10"-12" (pretty heavy) on top.

First choice - Hellgate. Hmmm, no tracks...weird? Boner time!

Greg (fellow trick or treater) was kind enough to snap a shot of my psychdness (yup, just made up a word). Hellgate and the The Cliff were the specials on the menu... No shit there was like 15"-20" on this WHOLE SIDE of the hill! Wind kinda brought everything from the back part of the mountain and deposited it all over the front side. Luckyyyyy...

Dessert after a hard day's work! Also, some sweet and pretty surreal views on the way back down the hill...

So, today was definitely a tough day to top in the Northeast. This is the earliest I've ever gotten day one and I was pretty pumped to be able to strap in October and to have the whole mountain pretty much to myself. There wasn't even a centimeter of accumulation until right before I got into the the town of Hunter so I really didn't know what to expect? It was SICK to see snow and Fall leaves shaking hands today and I hope you guys can enjoy the pics. Took about 5 runs total and rode from 12-4. Temps were probably in the mid 20's and the wind was blowin pretty much all day (probably some gusts of up to 35-40). Thanks again ULLR, keep it comin. Wishin everyone a powderlicious (that's two) season.

Stay on top!

SAFE TRAVELS in the backcountry!

Soligully, Dr. Oakley, Snoworries, Will and myself trained for "The '08-'09" up the mountain and in the backyard last night. Everyone did great and got a feeling on usage of the transmitters. Practice makes better. Be AVY AWARE!
